Open Studios 05/16/2012
Open Studios for Cornwall begins on 2nd June and continues until the 10th June. I'm around for the entire ten days from 10 am- 5pm. Please drop in for a cuppa and some conversation. The studio is all set up with the latest paintings and am still working on waves and coastal scenes; although as the year tickles by I'm enjoying plenty of experimentation. I've not quite finished the second large canvas but I've put it up anyway. Just a few minor tinkerings should sort out the little problems with the vegetation and the rocks. Trees are very hard - admire David Hockney very much for specialising in woods. I've done a little editing here as the woods up stream are very thick. It's great working with different colours. Lamorna Series 03/22/2012
Am very excited by a new painting project as described on my Gallery page. Have completed two paintings on the Lamorna theme and am half way through another massive canvas. Only trouble is- a large canvas takes me weeks. I've managed to do the water, sky, rocks and undergrowth and now I have to add a smattering of the magnificent sycamore trees that bulge from the banks. Thus with one swoop of a brush rearing upwards through the length of the canvas a painting could be ruined. Hey ho - if David Hockney can do it..... watch the gallery for the result coming in April! I've been lost in the woods for the past month working on a large canvas which I've finally completed. Now I can turn my attention to other ideas which have been fermenting away in the old brain but I need to get a move on. February was a month of encouraging sales and I either have to devote more time to my craft or learn to work faster. This building up of layers is a long old business. And there's another thing... for every painting that works there's a creation under the table that even after weeks of effort is hopelessly out of kilter with what the heart and head originally envisaged. What's that old saying? If at first you don't succeed...... Post Title. 01/06/2012
The rooftops and domestic architecture project is surging forward. It's fantastic to have so much source material within a 100 yards of the easel. I can don a mack and dash out with my sketchbook during the numerous tea breaks of the day. Have decided though not to convey the mists and rain of January onto canvas. No - these are rich golden pictures showing late summer evenings or autumn fields. Can only paint grey when the sun shines. First Post! 01/03/2012
OK - so it's New Year Resolution time. Regarding splashing around with paints I intend to complete my two ongoing projects. 1. The Pathways of West Penwith began near Lands End and a few of these are in the gallery on this site but I hope to stretch the project to about forty paintings and drawings of landscapes from inland and coastal pathways. The second project is related to the vernacular architecture of Cornwall. Having finally finished an epic building project lasting three and a half years of daily slog I became pretty familiar with granite and slate. So I hope to produce work on canvas, paper and slate of some of the lovely cottages and buildings in Cornwall. The starting point is home and as soon as it is dry I want to clamber up onto the roof and make an intimate study of the surrounding farm buildings. Promises, promises!! Will record my progress through this blog which should prevent me from entertaining any idea of giving up! |
