Details of the course
On the first day you will meet Penny in the studio for an introduction to landscape painting. Then everyone will head off to the Beacon for some blustery sketching and note-taking. Back in the studio you'll touch up some of your sketches with watercolour and charcoal before prepping your canvas for oil painting.
After a lunch created by Penny's partner, Simon, you will prepare your own oil colour mixing boards to use both in the studio and at home.
Then you will begin the practise of laying down oils onto canvas with your landscape thoughts in mind.

On the second day you will take a trip to the sea. Here everyone needs to think more emotionally and virtually climb into the sea to capture its mood. There will be an emphasis on light, composition and freedom.
Back in the studio you'll produce a huge loose paper seascape. After lunch you will concentrate on producing a sea or coastal scene on paper in oil.
Penny will demonstrate some effective techniques for livening up a painting. If time you can return to your landscape.

On day three you will go to the woods across the road. You will be encouraged to make loose sketches as Penny will be exploring the semi-abstract. Woods have their own atmosphere and you will be encouraged to think sideways.
Back in the studio, Penny will demo how to let the paint do some of the work for you. It is easy to return to the woods and there will be a looseness and freedom about this third day. This time you will be working on board.
Penny will discuss the importance of notes, photography and sketches and supply key notes for each participant. And there is always a landscape and seascape to finish!

Testimonials:
Debbie, October 2025
"That is the most relaxed l have ever felt on any course or experience of painting with others.
The reworking and colour additions to the sketches were a revelation. I think in retrospect it creates something that is a more useful permanent record to come back to again and again.
I learnt so much about the canvas preparation and creating texture with the acrylics and gesso. It made such a difference to my overpainting and enabled me to free myself from the references l had.
I found your inputs and suggestions really helpful and timely and l felt completely supported through it all."
