The private view for the exhibition was a wonderful social occasion.
Selecting sketches for the book
THE INSPIRATION FOR THE PROJECT
When Penny and her husband, Simon, joined their naturalist friends, Dave and Gerda Flumm on a series of walking expeditions a whole new world opened up.
While they walked, Dave scanned the sky and the land for wildlife. He teetered on cliffs and hunkered down amongst the gorse to show the Rumbles the extraordinary life that surrounded them.
Keen to learn more, Penny began taking notes and making rapid sketches.
Once back in the studio she was inspired to paint. Some of the results astounded her!
"I never thought I could paint a bird in such detail. I use the same techniques as a stormy sea and then with Dave's wonderful photography I began to work on some of the birds we saw on the walks."
And so the seeds for a book and an art show were set.
"I so enjoyed the creative process of writing and painting the scenes from each walk. Of course we could have written an encyclopaedia with Dave and Gerda's knowledge so I had to temper myself."
