Expressive Seascapes Part II
What a difference a month makes. Here we are approaching April and we are all at home. I haven’t seen the sea for ten days and the urge to paint has temporarily left me.
However at the beginning of the month cameraman Ian and photographer Alex came to put stage 2 of our little video into motion. It was time to apply the first layer of oil paint to my winter seascape.
Having thought about it for a long while I knew exactly how I was going to proceed. Ian was a little bemused at first but soon got to grips with my arm-waving and constant pacing back and forth.

The colours are soft and mellow and I’m soon in the zone. I need to work over the entire piece so that even though the results will be quite crude at this stage at least I will have the colours I am seeking.

Everything is a bit of a mess. I have a photograph, sketches and my memory. Soon it will be time to slowly push in to the white surf and bring in all the greys of this powerful scene.
Yes, at last the changes are working and I am now ‘feeling it.’ Time to stop and head for the drying room.
Day 5 and now I need to bring out the brushes. There’s plenty of texture to run the palette knife over after I have brushed in some coloured glazes.

You can see that the painting is coming on but for me the sky is too gaudy. After three days of layering I have calmed it down.but lost some of the oomf.
Fussy? Yes but I know where I want to go with this.
Almost there but I have to wait for April to pass and with any luck we will be able to film the last of the toning and highlighting on this wintry wave. This is what I will seek to achieve next month under the watchful gaze of the camera lens.:
1. More sunbeams moving up the wave.
2. Greater white splash against the sky.
3. Some lovely dark tones to highlight the white surf.
